Hypospadias

Overview

In the regular anatomy of the urinary system, the urethra is normally found at the tip of the penis. The urethra is a passage for urine and sperm.  But in some cases at birth, some boys are born with their urethral meatus below the penis or even the below the scrotum. This phenomenon is known as hypospadias. When the urethral meatus is found just below or near the glans penis, it is called distal hypospadias. But when the urinary opening is found in the middle up to the base of the penile shaft or below the scrotum it is referred to as proximal hypospadias.

It is diagnosed at birth, while the doctor or pediatrician assesses the baby right after delivery. Boys with hypospadias usually do not have a problem in urination. However, the surgical procedure is opted to correct the anatomical abnormality.
