Penile Implants are devices used to treat men with erectile dysfunction to obtain and sustain an erection. These devices are inserted into the penis and are mostly recommended only if various other treatments of erectile dysfunction fail to do any major change.

Today, we’ll discuss below why penile implants are needed, the types of penile implants and lastly its procedure.

Why is the penile implant done?

Penile implants are usually done to get and maintain an erection. Most men opt for medications and use devices like penis pulp to treat erectile dysfunction. Penile implants are for those who can’t take those medications or they don’t get sufficient erection using those various methods. Apart from erection, penile implants are also considered for the treatment of severe cases that lead to scarring of the penis, hurtful erection, or the penis getting curved inward.

However penile implants are complex procedures that can lead to serious difficulty. Hence your doctor is most likely to help you think it through before going with it. Some of the well-known problems for erectile dysfunction can be easily solved without surgery hence if you have the following then you need to rethink your decision.

  • Personal conflict or situational erectile dysfunction
  • Diabetes that is out of control
  • Going through any type of infection like pulmonary or urinary tract infection

Note that penile implants would help men get an erection but it is frequently asked by many patients- does penile implant work in stimulating sexual desire or sensation? In view of this question, the best doctor for penile implant surgery claims that it does not stimulate the desire however, it does not impact the natural desire.  It is also a common myth to consider penile implants making your penis increase in size since it is not possible. The penile implants penis can be slightly smaller than the normal.

What are the types of penile implants?

Broadly, there are two different types of penile implants. Here are the following:

Inflatable Implants

Inflatable implants involve two or three-piece design. It is one of the most common forms of penile implant that can be inflated to obtain an erection and deflated when not in need. The three prince implants contain a fluid-filled reservoir placed in the abdomen, a pump with a release valve and lastly two inflatable cylinders in the penis.

By squeezing the pump, the liquid is transformed into the cylinders from the reservoir which ultimately causes an erection. Pushing back the release valve drains brings the fluid back in the abandonment reservoir.

The two-piece implants link the fluid-filled reservoir and the pump in the scrotum. By bending the penis helps to transport the fluid to the reservoir.

Semi-Rigid or malleable, rods

These penile devices are known for being quite firm. Going with the name, these implants consist of bendable rods. It is mostly made of braided stainless steel wires or plastic discs covered in silicone. The rods are supposed to be bent upwards to perform the sexual activity while bent downward to hide it under the clothing.

Out of both, most patients opt for inflatable devices due to penis looking more natural compared to semi-rigid rods. Inflatable penile implants are known for stretching the girth of the penis creating a firm and natural-feeling erection. The one drawback of inflatable implants is the risk of mechanical difficulty which can turn relatively serious to embarrassing.
Some men go for malleable devices since they are easier to control but they require great manual support. The surgery for malleable implants is quite easy and requires a single incision done to insert the device. The drawback to malleable devices uses is often them being too firm which turns tough to control.

How are Penile implants done?

Pre-procedure stage

Penile implant surgery is extensive hence is performed at a surgery center. Before beginning with the surgery, you’ll be given anesthesia or any other type of medication to make you unconscious. Your doctor would also prescribe you with IV antibiotics to help eliminate infection and the surgical position is washed, shaved and groomed before the surgery.

Surgical stage

In the surgical stage, the initial stage is the insertion of a tube (catheter) into the bladder through the penis to collect urine. Then the surgeons could create an incision below the head of the penis, at the base and in the lower abdomen. Now the surgeon would expand the spongy tissue in the penis that would fill with blood-forming an erection. The tissue is known as corpora cavernosa.

Then the surgeon would proceed with finding the right fit of the implant and place the implant cylinder in the penis. The penile implants are all customised to individual body measurements. If your surgeon is opting for a two-piece device, a pump and valve are kept inside the scrotum. If not, the three-piece device, your doctor would implant a fluid reservoir under the abdominal wall by creating an internal incision. Once the device is placed suitable, the doctors would sew back the incision and take about 40 to 45 minutes to an hour.

 Post-surgical stage

After the completion of the surgery, you’ll be given pain-relief medication to comfort you. The pain, however, would continue to stay for a few weeks. You’ll also be given antibiotics for a week to get rid of the infection.

Since the implant is in its initial stage, your surgeon is most likely to advise to keep your penis up on your lower abdomen. It helps to keep the penis pointing onward while healing rather than obtain a downward curvature.

Back to normal would take some time and it would be instructed by your doctors to take some time out. It mostly takes about four to 6 weeks of rest to resume doing physical or sexual activity.  You’ll visit your doctor to remove the stitches in about two weeks. You’ll be advised to fully inflate and deflate inflatable penile implants about twice a day to build a habit of using them.
